CIP: 131007

A minor in special education provides undergraduate students with coursework on instructional practices to support the achievement of students with disabilities in inclusive environments. Students gain an understanding about the history and legal aspects of special education, the special education process (including IEPs and assessment), the identification of students with disabilities under federal law, evidence-based practices to address academic and behavioral needs in tiered systems of support, interventions and instructional strategies/methods to meet students' diverse needs in inclusive settings, and partnering with teachers and families.

This special education minor program may be of special interest to those in early childhood, middle school, secondary, or K-12 education majors, who have a desire to teach in inclusive general education classrooms. This minor program does not lead to certification in special education. This program is open to any major on campus with the exception of special education.
