Special Education M.S.Ed. with Certification

A graduate degree program designed to prepare students who seek to obtain Missouri initial certification in Special Education with a focus on working with students with mild to moderate disabilities. Students could include: those holding an undergraduate degree in an non-education field, paraprofessionals seeking to move into a teaching position, or those working within a related field (group home attendant, personal assistant, agency service provider, speech, occupational, or physical therapist).  The Master's in Special Education with Certification is an intensive teacher preparation program designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions needed to perform effectively in the classroom. Field Experiences are required, either completed through traditional field experiences (i.e. student teaching) or through teaching on a provisional certification (accessible after completing 15 hours of the program).  All required courses are offered as online courses.

Transfer courses and course substitution approval will be approved by advisor on a case-by-case basis. 

Entrance Requirement

1. Hold a baccalaureate degree AND

2. Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or 2.50 to 2.74 GPA with a 3.0 GPA on six hours of required graduate program coursework.

Comprehensive Assessment

To assess program effectiveness and meet the comprehensive assessment requirement, a Written Assessment of Competency Mastery is required of all students completing the M.S.Ed. in Special Education with Certification. The assessment will include reference to artifact/course content, standards, and reflection on growth as a teaching professional. The assessment will be completed during EDCI 62699 Capstone in Special Education.
