SOC 35425 Sociology of Immigration and Migration

This course introduces students to the sociology of immigration and migration. It focuses on the structural, global, and cultural components of immigration and migration with particular attention to the U.S. The course explores the major theories of why people immigrate/migrate, who immigrates/migrates, how people immigrate/migrate, classic and contemporary research on immigration/migration, the policies that shaped immigration/migration, and how immigration/migration intersects with issues of the law, social mobility, race and ethnicity, education, politics, employment, and social networks.  Prerequisite: SOC 35101.
