Designed for aspiring history educators and current history teachers, our online M.S. Ed. Teaching History program offers specialized training for teaching history at the middle school, high school, and college/university levels. Students will benefit from a comprehensive understanding of pedagogical theories, curriculum development, and the latest in educational technology while also immersing deeply in subjects like world history, U.S. history, and historiography. Through a combination of essential core courses and a range of electives, graduates will be prepared to excel in diverse educational settings and take on leadership roles in curriculum design, educational consulting, and more. Our flexible online format caters to working professionals, and our mission is to inspire a new generation to cherish history, nurturing critical thinkers and informed citizens along the way.

 

Program Admission Requirements

1. A minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 on the undergraduate transcript OR conditional admittance with a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 to 2.74 on the undergraduate transcript and at least a B in HIST 33601 in their first seven-week block.
2. Valid teaching certificate OR 2 years prior teaching with a valid teaching certificate OR enrolled in an alternative certification program.
3. Documentation of one of the following:

   • A 3.5 or higher on the analytical writing measure OR 140 or higher on the Verbal Reasoning measure of the GRE OR

   • successful completion of another master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least a 2.75 GPA OR

   • Writing sample (a unit lesson plan or historical research project of at least 15 pages).

Program Advisement

Students enrolled in the M.S. Ed. in Teaching History program will be assigned two advisors: a graduate faculty member in the School of Education and a graduate faculty member in History. The major advisor will assist students in approving and submitting the Degree Audit to the Graduate Office. When updates are complete, the student will be notified to review and agree to the Degree Audit. The major advisor must approve any additional changes to the student's Degree Audit by notifying the Graduate Office. Any course substitutions or other exceptions must be approved by the advisor in the School of Education.

Program Continuation Requirements

To maintain enrollment in the program, students must attain a 3.00 GPA with no grade lower than a “C” acceptable for degree requirements.

Deficiencies in undergraduate preparation will be assessed by the instructor, advisor, and graduate faculty, and remedial procedures will be prescribed. This could mean additional coursework or a special examination. In general, all but 600-level courses are open to any major, but individual instructors retain the prerogative of admission of individual students into their courses where eligibility appears questionable.

This degree requires 30 credits, at least 15 of which shall be from courses numbered 600 or above.

Program Portfolio Requirement

The Program Portfolio is the pinnacle assessment for students in the M.S. Ed. Teaching History program. This portfolio integrates lesson plans, student assessments, teaching reflections, and a unique research component centered on an educational inquiry project in history education. Together, these elements spotlight a student's proficiency in subject matter, pedagogical strategies, and professional skills. Rigorously evaluated by faculty as part of the HIST 33680 course in the program's final term/block, successful portfolio approval is essential for graduation and signifies a student's readiness to excel as a history educator.
