EDCI 62403 Observation and Documentation as Assessment in Preschool and Kindergarten

This course is designed to enable candidates to develop a knowledge base to purposefully assess children's developmental characteristics and learning outcomes and implement intervention strategies to maximize development and learning in young children.  Emphasis in this course is on assessment tools and methodologies specific to use with young children (preschool and Kindergarten).  Developmentally appropriate methods of collecting data for decision-making, as well as analysis and interpretation of observation and assessment results, will be emphasized to ensure competence of candidates in meeting state learning standards and national guidelines for appropriate practices.  Additionally, acquired knowledge and application of state-approved readiness tools will offer candidates a framework for utilizing, interpreting, and synthesizing assessment data from formal and informal contexts to support children's learning.  The role of the family in assessment, including the impact of cultural, economic, and linguistic diversity are central components of this course.
